Our iPad exploration continued last week with a three parter at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School. Biology and Bio Tech teacher Linda Simmons was able to dedicate some of her class time to augment her 10th graders’ cellular respiration lab.
This new approach to using the iPads was a much fresher experience than the those at Lakewood and Garfield. Getting the students engaged with the iPads is easy, the follow through with a meaningful application can be the tricky part. By using the two separate applications we can successfully get a well rounded use out of the iPad. The more traditional portion of the lesson is the collection of each student’s lab data via Google Docs. This went off without of a hitch once I was able to bookmark the correct link into each iPad. I had to help very few students with this or any part of the lesson, which is one of the iPad’s greatest strengths. From there we had each student use the cameras and video blog on their final lab analysis. This went well because they students had to think about the lab in a more realistic sense and now there is a documentation to show the rest of their class so they can all learn from each other.
Kennedy High School is the first unique iPad experience we’ve had where we haven’t just chosen try to use them as fancier laptops. I’m excited to go back to Kennedy and get started on what we have planned next.
